The division was founded on 26 August 1939. It took part in the Western Campaign (Fought in the Netherlands and Belgium). In 1940 it was ordered to France, and from 1941 it was stationed in the Le Havre area for coastal defense.

In December 1941 the division was urgently transported east and, divided into combat groups, deployed to the northern sector of the Eastern Front. The 376th Grenadier Regiment was detached from the division between February and December 1942 and fought in the Demyansk Basin (EASTERN FRONT MEDAL).

In September 1943 it fought on the Neva east of Leningrad (BLACK WOUND BADGE, IRON CROSS 2ND CLASS). After the start of the Russian winter offensive near Leningrad in January 1944, the division had to retreat via the Luga to Narva (INFANTRY ASSAULT BADGE).

In early October 1944 the division crossed the Daugava and reached Kurland. The next few months the division fought there (SILVER WOUND BADGE) and took part in the six battles of Kurland. The division was captured by the Russians in Kurland at the end of the war.
