The DRL Sports Badge replaced the DRA Sports Badge, founded in 1921, in 1934. The badge could be awarded in three grades to men and women over the age of 18: bronze, silver, gold.
Proficiency in sports, as well as participation in official training and competitions were included in the criteria.
The badge was worn on the left jacket pocket, in mini form on civilian clothes, or as a fabric patch on a tracksuit.
During the war years, changes were made to the criteria system to make it easier for soldiers serving on the front line to obtain and retain the award. Regarding the renewal In 1942, a new category was created for those disabled as a result of war injuries. The awarding of sports badges was suspended in 1944.
