The 227th Bicycle Battalion was formed on 28 December 1939 from elements of II./Infantry Regiment 366 and staff personnel of the 1st, 2nd and 8th Battalions of Infantry Regiment 412. On 1 March 1940, the battalion was reinforced with a bicycle reconnaissance company, and on 5 October 1940 with a heavy weapons company. On 15 November 1940, it was officially redesignated as the 227th Bicycle Detachment.
In 1942, the unit was reorganized into the 1st Bicycle Company, 2nd Motorcycle Machine Gun Company and 3rd Anti-Tank Company, and on 19 May 1942 renamed the 227th Anti-Tank and Reconnaissance Battalion. On 9 August 1942, it was redesignated the 227th Rapid Deployment Battalion. On 5 August 1943, the Anti-Tank Company was detached. On 3 November 1943, the battalion was reorganized into the 227th Divisional Fusilier Battalion (Reconnaissance) with four companies.
