Description (translated from an original German entry):
The battalion was formed on 6 September 1939 in Wesel, within Wehrkreis VI. It was subordinated to the 156th Division and served as the replacement unit for the 227th Infantry Division. On 5 November 1939 the battalion was transferred to Thorn in West Prussia (Wehrkreis XX). On 24 August 1940 it returned to Bonn in Wehrkreis VI. On 24 June 1941 it was moved to Liège in occupied Belgium.
On 5 October 1942 the Liège unit was split into Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 412 and Infanterie-Reserve-Bataillon 412. After the separation, the replacement battalion was subordinated to the 526th Division, while the reserve battalion came under the 156th Reserve Division.
On 26 October 1942 the replacement battalion was returned once more to Bonn. On 7 November 1942 both battalions were redesignated as Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 412 and Reserve-Grenadier-Bataillon 412.
Following the redesignation, the reserve battalion was transferred to the Channel coast in 1943. On 1 February 1944 it was redesignated as II./Grenadier-Regiment 103 of the 47. Infanterie-Division and thus dissolved.
The replacement battalion was expanded on 20 July 1944 and reorganised as Grenadier-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon 412. In September 1944 it was mobilised during Operation Valkyrie. In postal records it appeared as Reserve-Grenadier-Bataillon 412 / 526. Reserve-Division.
In October 1944 the battalion was redesignated as II./Grenadier-Regiment 860 of the 347. Infanterie-Division. It was reformed later the same month and placed under the 476. Division. In March 1945 the new battalion was mobilised as Ersatz-Regiment 536 during the Westgoten mobilisation in Ahaus (Wehrkreis VI).
