Description (translated from original entry):

The battalion was formed on 9 September 1939 in Butzbach, Wehrkreis IX. Infantry Replacement Battalion 471 was formed from personnel transferred from the replacement battalions of Infantry Regiments 36, 57 and 116 and was subordinated to the 159th Division. The battalion provided replacements for the 251st Infantry Division. On 28 November 1939, the battalion staff formed the staff of II Battalion, Infantry Regiment 379 of the 169th Infantry Division, after which it was reconstituted. On 1 October 1942, the battalion was divided in Butzbach into Infantry Replacement Battalion 471 and Infantry Reserve Battalion 471. After the division, the replacement battalion was subordinated to the 409th Division. The reserve battalion was assigned to the 159th Reserve Division and transferred to France. On 7 November 1942, both battalions were redesignated as Grenadier Replacement Battalion 471 and Grenadier Reserve Battalion 471. From 1 May 1943, the reserve battalion was subordinated to the 189th Reserve Division. On 25 November 1943, the reserve battalion formed II Battalion of Grenadier Regiment 949 of the 359th Infantry Division and was dissolved. On 1 April 1944, the new battalion was reorganized as Officer Training Battalion 471, directly subordinated to Wehrkreis IX. This battalion was dissolved again on 9 June 1944 and redesignated as Wehrkreis-ROB-Lehrgang IX.
