Description (translated from an original German entry):

The battalion was formed on 6 September 1939 in Heide, within Military District X (Wehrkreis X). Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 490 was initially subordinated to the 160th Division and served as the replacement unit for the 269th Infantry Division.

From 10 June 1940, the battalion was reassigned to the 190th Division. On 1 October 1942, the unit was divided into Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 490 and Infanterie-Ausbildungs-Bataillon 490. Both battalions were redesignated on 7 November 1942 as Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon and Grenadier-Ausbildungs-Bataillon, respectively.

On 7 April 1943, the two units were merged to form Grenadier-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon 490. From 1944, the battalion also provided replacements for the 83rd Infantry Division.

As of 1 November 1944, the battalion was subordinated to the 490th Division. Beginning in 1945, it additionally supplied replacements to the 542nd Volksgrenadier Division of Military District I (Wehrkreis I).

On 27 March 1945, the battalion was mobilized in Heide during the Leuthen call-up, as part of the 30th Replacement Regiment.
