The battalion was formed on 26 August 1939 in Detmold, in Military District VI. The 167th Infantry Replacement Battalion was subordinated to the 166th Division and provided replacements for the 86th Infantry Division. On 4 November 1939, the battalion was relocated to Deutsch Eylau in West Prussia, in Military District XX. On 17 August 1940, the battalion was transferred back to Herford, in Military District VI. On 1 October 1942, the Herford battalion was split into the 167th Infantry Replacement Battalion and the 167th Infantry Training Battalion; both battalions remained subordinated to the 166th Division. On 7 November 1942, both battalions were redesignated as Grenadier Replacement Battalion and Grenadier Training Battalion. In January 1943, the training battalion was relocated to Ringkøbing, Denmark. From 1 February 1943, the replacement battalion was subordinated to the 176th Division. On 26 October 1943, the training battalion was redesignated as 167th Reserve Grenadier Battalion and subordinated to the 166th Reserve Division. On 25 July 1944, the replacement battalion was expanded and reorganized as the 167th Grenadier Replacement and Training Battalion. In September 1944, the replacement battalion was mobilized as a Valkyrie unit. It was then incorporated into the 176th Infantry Division in October.
